Rule 8 - Water and Other Personal Attacks

Water does not come into play. You come into its play. Rule 8 governs ponds, creeks, and every hazard the course installed specifically with your name on it, including the ten-second silence you are owed and the second ball you are not.

The Rule (reproduced verbatim from the Dad Golf Handbook)

Purpose of Rule: governs ponds, creeks, and everything the course put there specifically for you.

8.1 Water does not "come into play." You come into ITS play. The pond was here first and it has a family to feed.

8.2 A ball that crosses water successfully must not be praised until it is found, as the golf gods punish premature celebration with a plugged lie.

8.3 After a ball enters the water, the player is entitled to a ten-second silence, which the Crew must honor. On the eleventh second, open season begins.

8.3a The second consecutive ball in the same water carries no silence entitlement. The Crew may begin talking while it is still airborne.

8.4 Skipping a ball across a pond intentionally is legal, encouraged, and scored the same as any other water ball, but is worth more.

8.5 - The Retriever Paradox. A ball retriever pays for itself in recovered balls and costs you everything in reputation. Both facts are true. Carry it with pride or not at all.

PENALTY FOR PREMATURE CELEBRATION OVER WATER (8.2): none formal. The plugged lie IS the penalty. Golf handles this one internally.

Official Ruling 8.3/1: Ken deposited two consecutive balls into the same pond on the 15th and attempted to invoke a second ten-second silence. The Committee denies the appeal under 8.3a, and confirms the Crew's commentary during the second ball's flight ("it's a lifestyle") was both legal and correct.

Never praise a carry until the ball is found, and accept that a second ball in the same pond forfeits your silence entirely. It's a lifestyle.
